Overview

Iraq is a land of ancient history, breathtaking ruins, and deep cultural heritage often overlooked but full of bucket list experiences. The most famous of these would have to be the mesmerizing ruins of Babylon, the holy city of Najaf, and the stunning Kurdish mountains in the north. While Iraq has faced challenges, its historical treasures like the Ziggurat of Ur and the citadel of Erbil make it a fascinating destination for adventurous travelers.

Flight Information for Iraq

As a tourist, your main airports in Iraq will be Baghdad (BGW), Erbil (EBL), and Najaf (NJF). Erbil and Najaf have better international connections, including flights from Europe and the Middle East. Baghdad has limited direct flights from neighboring countries. You can shop for flights to Iraq on Skyscanner or Kayak.

Safety Information You Should Know Before Visiting Iraq

Iraq has had security concerns, but some areas (like Kurdistan) are much safer than others. I’d recommend avoiding protests, staying updated on travel advisories, and hiring local guides in high risk zones. Terrorist attacks and kidnappings have occurred, so situational awareness is crucial.
The other thing to note is that Iraqi culture is conservative, so dressing modestly (especially in religious cities like Najaf and Karbala) is important.

Climate

Iraq’s climate is extremely hot in summer (June-August), with temperatures often exceeding 45°C (113°F). The best time to visit is November to March, when temperatures are milder (10-20°C / 50-68°F). Southern Iraq (like Basra) is more humid, while the north (Kurdistan) has cooler mountain weather.
I visited Iraq in April, and while the days were warm, evenings were pleasant and perfect for exploring ancient sites without the scorching heat.

Budget

Iraq is affordable but not as cheap as Southeast Asia. Budget hostels start around Approx 15,000 IQD ($10 USD), while mid-range hotels cost Approx 50,000-100,000 IQD Approx ($35-$70). Meals at local restaurants range from Approx 5,000-15,000 IQD ($3-$10). Transportation is cheap taxis within cities cost just a few dollars, but long-distance travel (like Baghdad to Erbil) is best done by domestic flights or private drivers for safety.

Other Essential Travel Tips:

  • Local SIM Cards: Get one at the airport (Zain AsiaCell are reliable).
  • Cash is King: Credit cards are rarely accepted outside big hotels.
  • Respect Religious Sites: Remove shoes before entering mosques.
  • Avoid Border Areas: Some regions near Syria/Iran are unstable.
  • Learn Basic Arabic/Kurdish: Helps with communication outside tourist zones.

Final Thoughts

Iraq is not your typical tourist destination, but for those seeking history, culture, and adventure, it’s a rewarding experience. Would I recommend it? Yes but only for well prepared travelers.
